The Ministry of Tourism of Dominica signed an XCD 275,668.30 contract with Alixon Laronde for the major transformation of heart of Kalinago territory, Kalinago Barana Aute. This project is being anticipated to strengthen the profile of the country as a sustainable tourism destination which will play a huge role in creating several opportunities for the local citizens.
As per the details, this transformation is a part of the Kalinago Tourism Development Project which will include the restoration of the building roof of the administration. This project will play a significant role in revitalizing the area post Hurricane Maria.
Notably, the Kalinago Barana Aute is located on the east coast of Dominica. It is a cultural center and museum which is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Kalinago people. Kalinago Barana Aute has welcomed several visitors and has given them a platform to experience the vibrant culture and traditions of the Kalinago people since 2007.
This unique attraction is known for their resilience and strong connection to the nature which is home to about 3000 Kalinago people and showcases the traditional village life, crafts, and cuisine. The visitors have the great opportunity to explore traditional Ajup huts, the central carbet for cultural events, and natural sites like the Isulukati Waterfall.
The Ministry of Tourism of Dominica stated that the visitors can learn much about the Kalinago people through the exhibitions on Kalinago history, traditions, and crafts, as well as cultural performances. They added that Kalinago Barana Aute also shed light on the traditional practices which are followed by the indigenous people such as basket weaving and cassava bread making at the center.
Recently on 4th November, 2024 the Crayfish River development committee and the Disaster committee of Dominica joined together in order to clear the road leading to the Kalinago Barana Aute, making it accessible for the visitors. As per the details, they rehabilitated the Waitikubuli National Trail from Jolly John’s Park to the Kalinago Barana Aute on Community Day of Service.
Moreover, the Canada’s High Commissioner, Brenda Wills has also recently paid an official visit to the heart of Kalinago territory, Kalinago Barana Aute on Tuesday, 5th November, 2024. During her visit, she experienced various local customs such as farming, fishing, and hiking. She also learnt about several folk stories, discussed Kalinago myths and diverse experience of Kalinago culture.
The Tourism Authority added that this transformation of Kalinago Barana Aune is expected to play a significant role in bringing large number of tourists. It would also be a great opportunity for the visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating culture of Kalinago people.
