CSG Patricia Scotland visits Barbados, aims to discuss Bridgetown initiative with PM Mottley

Barbados: The Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland engaged in fruitful discussions with the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley and the Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit. She also had discussions with their cabinet ministers on mobilizing greater international support to help the Caribbean tackle the climate crisis.

In Barbados, she aims to discuss the Bridgetown initiative with PM Mottley. The initiative targets the financing problem by creating more sources from which developing nations can borrow to mitigate and recover from the disasters of the climate crisis.

While sharing the development on her official Twitter account, CSG Scotland said that it was wonderful to have been in the Caribbean to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Commonwealth.

She outlined, “It’s wonderful to have been in the Caribbean to celebrate the 75th anniversary of our Commonwealth of Nations. 56 countries, 2.7 billion people, more than one third of the world, 60% of whom are under the age of 30.”

The CSG added that she was thrilled to have been able to visit her country of birth, Dominica, to see how the country has resuscitated life in nature has been a remarkable opportunity.

She also talked to the insurance industry who have been becoming even more important to all the Caribbean nations as they struggle to respond to climate change. CSG Scotland further noted, “Will it be possible for us to have whole island assurance assured?”

Patricia Scotland added that in Barbados she discussed the Bridgetown initiative in order to discuss what the leaders need to do to help change the financial institutions so they better respond to the reality which is now for everyone in the Caribbean.

While urging the leader to take immediate action for climate change, she added, “All of this in a region of beauty and wonder, but a region which is really challenged, really vulnerable. The clock is ticking and I’m so proud that this region is rising to the challenge.”

CSG Scotland have always been at the forefront of battling with the challenges posed by climate change and stays connected to her roots in the Caribbean.
