Caribbean nations will receive millions from Canada to boost resilience & sustainability

Caribbean nations will receive a CAD$ 39.2 million fund from Canada for various initiatives. The Minister of International Development- Ahmed Hussen, made the announcement at the 46th Regular Meeting of CARICOM in Guyana. 

These initiatives will encourage biodiversity conservation, economic resilience, climate action, food security, health, gender equality, and sustainable and inclusive governance, which will foster the nation’s overall development. 

Minister Hussen expressed his commitment to support the CARICOM nation by announcing the funds for four new international projects in various countries of Caribbean.

According to the reports, Cuso International will receive an amount of $5 million to promote the rights of 2SLGBTQI+ people all over the nation and encourage gender equality in the following nations. 

– St Vincent and the Grenadines

– Belize

– Dominica

– Saint Lucia

– Suriname

– Grenada

– Guyana

– Jamaica

– Haiti 

The funds will be provided by Cuso International in collaboration with the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition, along with the Eastern Caribbean Coalition, to boost the spirit of gender equality. 

If sources are to be believed, it has been mentioned that Canada allocated CD$ 4.2 million for the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism Resilience in Fisheries project. This foundation will support them in strengthening the transition to clean energy in the Caribbean fisheries and aquaculture sectors. 

Moreover, this productive initiative will support the adoption of sustainable energy technologies, the development of practical business models and the certification of low-carbon and carbon-neutral fisheries across the region.

Last month, CARICOM received US$ 15.8 million in funding from United States to address biodiversity and climate change impacts in the Caribbean nations. US Ambassador to United Nations- Linda Thomas made an announcement in 46^th Meeting of CARICOM that these new funds will help in safeguarding the marine biodiversity and support in building resilience.

Such funds from other nations underscore the importance of foreign relations and display the strong ties of Caribbean nations with them.
