Bahamas shines at Rum & Rhythm, dominating culinary and mixology awards in New York
The locals from the Bahamas claimed an impressive three of the four top awards for the chef and mixologist of the year.

In a significant development, Bahamas has emerged as the star of the night at the highly anticipated Rum & Rhythm benefit which was organised by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s Scholarship Foundation.
The locals from the Bahamas claimed an impressive three of the four top awards for the chef and mixologist of the year. They showcased their exceptional culinary prowess and displayed the local food of the Caribbean in New York City.
The event took place at Lavan Midtown in New York City and was held after a hiatus of four years. It highlighted the culture and culinary excellence of the Caribbean region and reaffirmed its status as the ultimate destination.
It is reported that the event saw tough competition from across the region with participating teams from Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Saint Lucia and St Kitts. But, of all these teams, it was the Bahamas that truly shone and dominated both the judges as well as people’s choice categories.
The Bahamian team was led by mixologist Marv Cunningham, who took away both the judges’ and people’s choice awards for Mixologist of the Year. On the other hand, Deja Rutherford was placed 2nd in the People’s Choice Awards and took home the Chef of the Year award.
It is to be noted that the panel of judges comprised of experts from several prestigious international publications such as the New York Times, Conde Nast and JetBlue Airways.
Other than the Bahamas, other Caribbean destinations also showcased themselves including Saint Lucia’s Shorne Benjamin securing the People’s Choice Chef of the Year Award while Barbados and Antigua tying for 2ndposition in the Judge’s Choice Mixologist category.
Meanwhile, Bermuda took the 3rd place in the Judge’s Choice Mixologist category and St Kitts was placed 2nd in the Judges’ Choice Chef of the Year category.
Following the reveal of the winners, the head of the Rum & Rhythm organising committee, Eusi Skeete expressed his excitement about the huge success of the event and also highlighted its significance for Caribbean tourism.
He outlined that Rum & Rhythms not only celebrates the rich cultural heritage but also plays an important role in funding educational opportunities for Caribbean nationals who are pursuing careers in tourism.
Skeete noted that the outstanding performances by the participating nations showcase the immense talent and dedication within the Caribbean community.
In addition to this, the evening was not just about awards but it was a vibrant celebration of the Caribbean culture. The attendees indulged in an array of regional rums as well as mouthwatering dishes which were made by award winning chefs while enjoying live performances.
