St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda: Antigua and Barbuda High Commission in the United Kingdom celebrated ‘History and Growth’ on August 15, 2023.
The Antigua and Barbuda High Commission (London) recently hosted an enlightening panel discussion as part of the Voices of Windrush Festival (VOW Fest).
Exploring ‘The Role of The Windrush Generation in Creating Economic and Social Growth in The Caribbean Region,’ the event highlighted the remarkable impact of the Windrush Generation on the Caribbean’s progress, according to the official update by the High Commission.
Reportedly, distinguished speakers, including economist Dr Jonathan Thomas, statistician and actuary Dr Godfrey Martin, and Karen-Mae Hill, Antigua and Barbuda’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, engaged in dynamic discussions. The conversation, skillfully moderated by pupil-barrister Creanna Dodson, delved into economic strategies and regional integration.
The Voices of Windrush Festival, spanning six weeks, honours the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Windrush, a historic voyage that brought 492 passengers from the Caribbean to the UK.
The event was a resounding success, attracting members of the Caribbean diaspora and academia. Questions on economic diversification, remittances, and revitalizing sectors like agriculture and tourism sparked invigorating conversations. Regional integration emerged as a key factor for sustainable economic growth.
High Commissioner Karen-Mae Hill emphasized the importance of recognizing the Windrush generation’s significant contributions. She underscored the Caribbean’s achievements in various sectors, despite challenges.
The Voices of Windrush Festival’s founder, Jacqueline McKenzie, thanked High Commissioner Hill and the Antigua and Barbuda High Commission for their pivotal support. The festival aimed to celebrate the history, experiences, and future prospects of the Windrush Generation, symbolizing the start of Caribbean migration to the UK.
According to the sources, Jacqueline McKenzie stated, “I’m indebted to HE Karen-Mae Hill for hosting such an important event in the Festival, a discussion on the role the Windrush Generation can play in creating economic and social growth in the Caribbean region.”
The Antigua and Barbuda High Commission continues to actively contribute to the Voices of Windrush Festival and supports initiatives advocating for the Windrush Generation’s legacy and interests.
