Air traffic increases in Cuba as the airports reopen

Over the last few weeks, air traffic in Cuba has increased.

It is noteworthy that the rise in air traffic came after the Cuban airports reopened operations, although the operations are at 40% in comparison to 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The president of the Cuban Civil Aviation Corporation, Roberto Peña, said that the movement of travellers fell in Cuba, which is expected to return to pre-COVID levels at least by the year 2023.

The pandemic hurt the Airfreight as well although it is one of the activities which maintained cargo, collaboration and humanitarian flights with vitality.

Although he predicted a severe decrease in flights in late 2020, international airlines are requesting flights to Cuba gradually.

According to the President of Cuba’s Civil Aeronautics Institute, Brigadier General Armando Luis Daniel Lopez said that before the airports were closed because of the pandemic, around 60 companies flew to Cuba and gradually, they are asking to return.

So far, around 34 airlines requested for permissions to restart flights to Cuba, and these include 14 airlines from Europe, 11 airlines from Latin America and the Caribbean and nine airlines from North America.

Cuba cancelled commercial air operations, on March 23, including regular and charter flights, which were resumed on October 15 under strict health protocols at all airports, except Havana, which resumed its functions on November 15.
