3 Caribbean athletes break national records at Tokyo Olympics 2020
In the Triple Jump Event at Tokyo 2020 Olympics games, Dominica’s Triple Jumper, Thea Lafond, is only 1 step away to secure her spot in the finals

Many Athletes from the Caribbean region are performing at the ongoing 2020 Tokyo Olympics that started on 23 July 2021. Due to the restrictions imposed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, no audience is allowed the all the Olympic matches, and even all players are kept in a bubble to keep them safe from the virus., and athletes are transported from Village to venue in a bubble meant to keep them and the Japanese public safe from coronavirus.
St Lucia:
St Lucian swimmer Mikaili Charlemange has set up the new national record while performing at the Olympics. The new national record has been established in the women’s 50m freestyle swimming.
Mikaili Charlemange completed her swimming out of 5th lane in heat 5 while finishing in the 2nd position with the time record of 26.99 sec, which was faster than the previous national record of 27.27 sec, which was also set by Charlemange in the year 2019.
Cameroon’s Norah Elizabeth Milanesi won the heat with the timing of 26.41 sec, after which St Lucia’s swimmer Mikaili Charlemange stood 2nd with the timing of 26.99 sec, and Fiji’s Cheynne Rova secured the 3rd position with a timing of 27.11 sec.
Antigua’s Samantha Roberts finished the swimming at 6th position with the timing of 27.63 sec. This has been her fastest time since 2016.
Mikaili Charlemagne had recently turned 18 years old. She is a student athlete at Springfield College in the United States of America.
Commonwealth of Dominica:
In the Triple Jump Event at Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Dominica’s Triple Jumper, Thea LaFond, is only 1 step away to secure her spot in the finals of the Triple Jump Event.
Thea Lafond, while jumping for 14.60 meters, she sets a national record in Dominica. Thea Lafond had given her personal best performance in this event. Out of 34 jumpers, Thea Lafond secured her 3rd position, and she also topped in the group “B”. With this, she had stepped into the finals that would take place on Sunday 1 August.
Barbados:
Barbadian Olympic athlete Alex Sobers who had performed in the Olympics twice in different years with a big splash, made a new record in men’s 200-metre freestyle swimming.
Alex Sobers secured 6th position in the match, but he made a new national record and failed to step into the next round, but he made the new national record of 1min 48sec 09m sec. The new record is faster than the previous national record that was also set by Alex Sobers.
