1 death confirmed during protest in Cuba

One death has been identified during the anti-government protest in Cuba that has put the island in high tension from the last few days. 

Diubis Laurencio Tejeda, who was 36 years old, died on the outskirts of Havana on Monday during a clash between protestors and police.

The interior ministry stated that the person who died in the protest was involved in the attack on a government facility. Some of the Demonstrater have also been arrested. But witnesses said that the security forces attacked people who had taken to the streets to protest.

The rare nationwide anti-government protests started on Sunday when thousands of Cuban began protesting over food and medicine deficits, price hikes and the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. These unauthorised public gatherings have been illegal in Cuba.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel had called the protestor as counter-revolutionaries. President Miguel Díaz-Canel government had tried to blame the United States, and its economic sanctions, for both the protests and Cuba’s broader problems.

As yet, there is no official explanation for how Diubis Laurencio Tejeda died.

State media said that the person who died had been involved in “disturbances” in the La Guinera neighbourhood of Havana on Monday, where a group attacked a government facility. It reported that several others had been injured, including members of the security forces.

According to the interior ministry, accused demonstrators of vandalism, setting fires and attacking the police as well as civilians.

But witnesses have said the security forces attacked peaceful protesters who joined a spontaneous demonstration in the neighbourhood.

Communist-run island Cuba has been experiencing a protest by its people of the country. Thousands of Cubans have been running down the streets with slogans” Down With Dictatorship”. These all events were also noticed in the Cuban capital Havana. While the protestors raged on the streets of Cuba and after being warned by the police, they were detained and beaten by the Cuban police.

The main reason for these protests has been the situation in Cuba due to the collapse of their economic structure and restriction on the civil liberties and the authorities while handling the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
