Nevis marks milestone with successful first corneal transplant
This surgery is a part of the transformative project of the Nevis “Vision for All.”

Nevis marked a significant milestone in the health sector of the country as the Alexandra Hospital performed its first ever corneal transplant in 2024. This historic and successful treatment shed light on the continuous efforts undertaken by the authorities towards improving the overall health department of the country.
As per the details, the first corneal transplant was performed by Dr Roberto Pineda from Harward Medical School in collaboration with other professionals, including Dr Hubble and Dr Crespo. The surgery was performed by the doctors in order to correct the eye condition called keratoconus which is also known as the weakness of the cornea.
This surgery is a part of the transformative project of the Nevis “Vision for All.” It is a non-profit US-based organization. The main motive of this organization is to promote health care to all medically underserved people and communities by providing them with essential eye-care treatment and education.
This project was conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Health through the Nevis Eye Care Program. Under this programme, the authorities have conducted several screenings for people who are dealing with vision impairment and vision-threatening eye diseases.
Premier Mark Brantley shared a glimpse of the treatment of the patient on his social media account. He said that it is a joint effort between the doctors and the authorities and therefore, congratulated everyone, involved in ensuring the success of this surgery.
He also acknowledged Dr Hubbe for his dedicated services for the development of the health sector of Nevis. He stated that all these advancements by the Nevis Health Department shed light on their significant efforts towards relieving the pain of all their patients.
Premier Brantley also lauded Minister of Health of Nevis, Jahnel Nisbett for her efforts towards the welfare of the people of the nation. He stated that they are committed to make efforts in order to provide the best medical care to all the citizens of the country.
He stated that all the doctors working at the Alexander Hospital in Nevis have a common vision of relieving the pain of all their patients. The authorities have taken several initiatives which also include the visit by the international eye care professionals twice a year.
These professionals perform several services such as cataract surgery, laser for diabetic and many more. All these services are conducted under the “Vision for all” project in order to benefit the people suffering from eye diseases.
Premier Brantley stated that they are working very hard and will continue to do so in order to advance the Health Department of the country.
