UN Envoy to investigate sexual assaults reports from Hamas Attack

Pramila Patten, the UN’s special representative on sexual violence, visited Israel on Monday and remained there for a week to revise the cases reported as a result of Hamas soldiers during the October 7 attack that triggered Israel’s war in Gaza.

She met Israel’s president, Issac Herzog, his wife Michal and other diplomats. UN representative Patten encouraged victims to meet her.

“We really want to ensure that you have justice so that we put an end to this heinous act”, Patten added as per Herzog’s office.

According to the reports, the sexual assaults were part of a deadly warfare conducted by the militants from Hamas and other Gaza groups that killed nearly 1,200 people, most of them civilians. Moreover, they took more than 250 hostages from southern Israel.

Notably, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned women’s rights organisations such as United Nations as they did not damn the reports of sexual assault immediately.

Additionally, more than 26,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Health Ministry in Hamas report stated that the majority of them were women and minors.

If sources are to be believed, it mentioned that the war in Southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulted in the killing of 1,200 people and about 250 people were taken as hostages.
