India’s diplomatic triumphs are in focus as Dominica’s highest national award, the Dominica Award of Honour, is to be bestowed on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Indian External Affair Minister, S. Jaishankar hailed the move to be an apt one.
Jaishankar welcomed this and said it was a testament to India’s leadership in international partnerships. “An apt recognition for PM Modi’s leadership and solidarity with the Global South. This honor reflects India’s commitment to healthcare, education, and digital transformation across the Caribbean and beyond,” he said.
The honor, to be conferred in Georgetown, Guyana, during the India-CARICOM Summit 2024, speaks not only for Dominica’s appreciation for India’s support during the COVID-19 pandemic but also to India’s rising global muscle.
Minister Jaishankar’s remarks on the subject also focus on the kind of leadership India has provided the world, especially when interacting with smaller nations by timely support and cooperation.
India’s Stand During the Pandemic
Under PM Modi’s leadership, India was running a vaccine diplomacy program which went ahead to provide doses to the countries that were in dire need, Dominica being one of them.
India had supplied 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to Dominica in February 2021 thus allowing the country to inoculate people and help its cordial Caribbean nations.
This step roots the profile of India as a responsible regional actor in the Caribbean, furthering it as a relatively dependable partner in the efforts of extending solidarity during times of critical moment. It is this strategic approach to global cooperation that has uplifted India’s diplomatic status and reaffirmed its positioning in dealing with shared challenges.
Deepening Relations with the Caribbean
The India-CARICOM Summit would give an opportunity to India to strengthen ties with Caribbean nations. Some of the leaders such as Dominica President Sylvanie Burton and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit are expected to attend this summit that will discuss sustainable development, climate resilience, and innovating technology.
Jaishankar said that it is not individual recognition but a reflection of India’s inclusive diplomacy that PM Modi has received such accolade.
Prime Minister Modi has time and again emphasized the necessity for India to cooperate with the Global South and overcome such a momentous global challenge as health crises or environmental sustainability.
A Future Vision for Global Diplomacy
With India striving hard to consolidate partnerships with other countries, this recognition for the Indian PM will assure India as an equally important nation in the global world.
It could well serve as a witness to India’s long-enduring commitment to solidarity, resilience, and mutual growth. This shall be a day not just to celebrate shared history but paved the way forward to a future of collaboration and shared progress.
