Guyana: The construction work is underway at the highly anticipated Wakenaam Solar Project. The 750-kilowatt solar-powered grid-forming system has been scheduled for completion by December 2024.
This information has been shared by the Prime Minister of Guyana, Brigadier Mark Phillips. He received an update on the project during a high-level meeting conducted with key stakeholders from MASDAR, BSW Energy, Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) and the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) at his office on Camp Street.
This meeting was attended by several delegates including, Oliver Broughton, the Project Manager for MASDAR under the UAE-CREF; Representatives of BSW Energy, Miguel Themer and Mr Roque Bociu; CEO of GEA, Dr Mahendra Sharma; Acting CEO of GPL, Kesh Nandlall and GPL’S Divisional Director of Engineering Services, Ryan Ross.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister exchanged significant dialogues on the progress of the project and its expected completion date. Oliver Broughton, the Project Manager for MASDAR under the UAE-CREF stated that “the project is on track to be completed by December 2024.”
While shedding light on this project, the Prime Minister stated that this S$2.3m initiative is a part of the UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF) and will play a huge role in transforming energy access on the island of Wakenaam.
He acknowledged the work undergoing on the project and stated that he is extremely pleased with its progress. The Prime Minister further asserted that it is more than just an energy project that promises to offer progress, sustainability, and improved quality of life for the citizens of the nation.
PM Phillips also stated that this Wakenaam Solar Project is expected to significantly boost the island’s energy generation capacity, complemented by planned upgrades to the existing power plant. He also added that his administration is committed to providing clean energy to all the citizens of the island nation which would play a crucial role in Guyana’s energy transformation and long-term sustainability goals.
