Grenada to construct sustainable 500 houses, aims to combat climate change effect

The Government of Grenada has taken significant initiative in order to provide citizens with the affordable and sustainable housing with the launch of Project 500. This project has announced its first housing development site in Dunfermline, St. Andrew, dividing into two phases both beginning in 2024.
With this ambitious project undertaken by the Government, the authorities are aiming to construct around 500 affordable and sustainable homes with advanced technologies and efficient building methods.
These homes in Project 500 will feature energy-efficient roofing, energy-efficient windows, Low-Flow plumbing fixtures, and rainwater harvesting systems. These features will play a huge role in promoting environmental responsibility and reducing overall living costs.
PHASE ONE
The Phase one of the project was started in June 2024 with the clearing of the first site in Dunfermline, St. Andrew. In this phase, the authorities constructed around 17 homes and homeowners were taken on a tour to visit these sites.
PHASE TWO
In the phase two, the authorities are aiming to construct around 80 homes at full development of the Dunfermline Housing Site.
Notably, the Project 500 is being implemented through four strategic divisions:
DIVISION A – GOVERNMENT AND HOUSING AUTHORITY LANDS
Using large parcels of land to create new communities, starting with Dunfermline in St. Andrew, Grenville Vale/Beausejour in St. George, and Dumfries in Carriacou. Project 500 housing developments are designed to offer residents a blend of comfort, sustainability, and community living.
DIVISION B – PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS
Project 500 invites private individuals and companies to collaborate in the development of affordable housing sites with diverse financing and land provision models.
DIVISION C – LAND ACQUISITION
Purchasing various land parcels to support a range of housing initiatives. It includes parcels of various sizes, ranging from small to large, which will help support the development initiatives.
DIVISION D – PRIVATE LANDOWNERS
Asking private landowners to provide smaller land parcels for development with a vision to ensure greater opportunities for homeownership.
The Housing Authority of Grenada managed this groundbreaking special project, aiming at providing high-quality housing for Grenadians. While shedding light on this project, the Chairman, Hugh Thomas stated that they are using cutting-edge construction techniques and sustainable practices, in order to provide a comfortable housing facilities to the citizens of the country.
While emphasising on this project, the Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell noted that Project 500 represents a bold and visionary investment in the nation’s future. He added that with this initiative, his administration aims to provide an affordable, safe, comfortable and sustainable homes to the residents of the country.
