The Seismic Research Center (SRC) reported, early Tuesday morning, that there was a significant burst of volcanic earthquakes beneath Dominica. Beginning at around 12:45 AM, the seismic activity continued until 7:30 AM, and, over that period, a total of 345 events were recorded.
The SRC also reports, however, that while some of the quakes reached magnitudes that could be widely felt by people, they did not exceed 3.5 in magnitude. The SRC said that the magnitude was under a threshold that usually allows them to put updates on their social media platforms.
Although on the low, the frequency and number of quakes prompted a concern among the locals. According to them, the rate of earthquakes has declined since 7:30 AM. “However, the center remains vigilant on the situation, and updates the Office of Disaster Management of Dominica regularly.”
The SRC noted that information should be obtained from relevant authorities and there is no need for the public to continue panicking since they are keeping a vigilant watch on the seismic activity.
Social media has been abuzz with reports from residents who felt the tremors, particularly in the northern parts of Dominica. From one Thibaud resident: “Felt it in Thibaud.” Another Portsmouth resident said, “Yes, strong in Portsmouth.”
Similar reports have come from Toucari and Savanne Paille, with resident describing the tremors as “very strong.”
The constant monitoring by the SRC and communication with the ODM is vital to the continued sharing of information with the public and state of readiness. The center has urged residents to remain calm and take any directions or advisories offered by the ODM.
As the events are unfolding, SRC shall keep updating, informing, and empowering the residents on how they can make sense and respond to the seismic activity. The inter-agency collaboration that is taking place between the SRC and the ODM shows preparedness and timely communication in the management of such types of natural events.
Meantime, residents are advised to keep more alert and follow the updates provided by the SRC and ODM so as to ensure their safety and well-being.
