The Grenada Meteorological Services (GMS) issued a dense haze advisory due to a significant increase in the concentration of Saharan dust in the atmosphere. The authorities advised the public to take precautionary measures and warned citizens of potential hazards.
People with respiratory issues and mariners are suggested to take precautions and avoid leaving their homes as the Saharan Dust remains the dominant feature.
As per GMS reports, they observed a mild concentration of dust in the air, which is reducing the air quality to moderate levels across the Southern Windward Islands. It has been noted that the air quality is supposed to range between good and moderate throughout the week.
The situation is not ideal and it has been advised by the authorities that it would be ill-advised to go out when the conditions are bad. This dust has been carried out by the winds from the Sahara Desert in the North Africa across the Atlantic Ocean.
Due to an increase in the dust, the air quality in Grenada remains ‘Unhealthy.’ The people of sensitive groups such as elderly adults, children, and pregnant women are urged to exercise caution in tackling the situation and protecting their health and well-being.
The citizens may follow the steps mentioned below to avoid getting sick in the current situation:
– The citizens suffering from respiratory illness should stay at home and avoid getting out of their homes
– Residents are advised to keep inhalers, steroid nasal sprays and antihistamines with them, especially those suffering from sinuses or asthma
– The individual should immediately visit a medical facility when they find the first sign of difficulty in breathing
– Cover water sources like wells, water storage ponds and containers to avoid contamination
– It is important to wear dust masks or face masks while going out, especially in crowded areas
– If one feels a foreign body sensation in the eyes, wash them with clean water. Portable, boiled or chlorinated water is preferable. Remember to wash your hands before starting the procedure
The Grenada Meteorological Services informed the citizens that they would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.
