Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland, met with the Minister of State at the Federal Ministry of Environment of Nigeria Sharon Ikeazor at UNOC 2022. She received her warm support for the work delivered for the Commonwealth on Ocean and Climate Change, including the living lands character.
Commonwealth Secretary-General shared the story of commonwealth Blue Character with a global audience at UNOC 2022 as well as she listened to the views of member countries and partners on how they can build on their own unique Action Group model to support Ocean Action and Climate Action.
In actual the underlying principles of the Blue Character come from the character of the commonwealth which was signed in the year 2013 by the Queen Elizabeth.
The world`s ocean is crucial to life on earth as it provides a largest source of protein and absorbs almost a quarter of Carbon Dioxide from earth. Oceans are the source of food, a habitat, and diversity to aquatic life.
But, it is a matter of concern as population is growing and pollution is increasing with respect to it. Moreover ocean is becoming warm and it is affecting the whole eco-system as acidity level is increasing and habitats are being destroyed. It can’t be resolved by the one country and it is a matter of consideration for every nation.
As ocean comes under the considerations of the Commonwealth, several countries united together to work to protect the oceans. There are total 54 of countries which come under this program. They are continuously making efforts to protect oceans from getting polluted in order to protect aquatic life.
There are several groups which are serving in different things such as, one group is trying to control acidification of the oceans, while other group is trying to protect aquatic life. Their main aim is to reduce human`s actions on oceans, which is polluting ocean waters through using single use plastics items.
Therefore, Commonwealth Blue Charter is doing their best in order to protect ocean bodies from getting polluted. Moreover, it also helps to resolve the issues of Climate change too.
