Bahamas: Lyford International School tightens security following gun threat by student

Bahamas: Lyford International School has issued a release addressing preventive measures taken to ensure security across the school premises. This release was issued following threats posed by a student involving gun crime.

The release noted that the school has taken all necessary precautions, including increasing security at the Upper School Campus and monitoring social media. The counselors have also been actively involved in conducting meetings with security groups to further control the situation.

The preventive measures are a result of a recent incident that took place inside the school premises. A student in Grade 9 from Upper School was reported giving threats involving gun violence towards another student. He also shared images of the weapon while making the alleged threat.

The incident was reported to the authorities immediately after its disclosure and they are continuing their investigations since then.

The Head of the School, Audrius Bardukas in light of the rising concerns among the parents and guardians, immediately issued a release highlighting that the school along with authorities is thoroughly investigating the incident.

Bardukas further highlighted in the letter that, “Most importantly, based on information we have learned through our investigation, the incident did not pose a threat to the school community. It is safe for students and teachers to be at school.”

He further addressed that the incident did not pose any threat to the school according to the investigations conducted so far.

While the immediate problem has been handled, Bardukas stated that the incident underscores a rising challenge faced by kids, parents, and schools when it comes to social media.

A conference was also held to discuss safety measures, during which the Assistant Commissioner responsible for the Schooling Division Dr Chaswell Hanna confirmed that students and all the parents and guardians are continuously conducting their investigations.

Hanna further stated that it had been confirmed that no person was harmed or no weapon was ever brought to the school. He added that school authorities are vigilant about the incident and are making sure that the school remains a safe place for all.
