Antigua and Barbuda PM Gaston Browne meets Director-General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay

St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda: Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, is currently in France, Paris, where he met with Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO. The meeting was scheduled at the headquarters of UNESCO on July 19, 2023 (Wednesday).

The major topics discussed during this meeting were:
1. The promotion of exchanges and partnerships between countries for education, particularly international university students’ exchanges;
2. The protection of the oceans and the environment as a universal cultural asset of humanity;
3. The improvement of access to information technologies, an essential cultural and educational vector for developing States or with geographical particularities.

The meeting was conducted via Boris Latour – the newly elected Permanent Delegate of Antigua and Barbuda to UNESCO in Paris, who also serves as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

The Delegate was praised by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, who mentioned that he has full confidence. PM Browne also expressed that Latour’s representation will be important, and he may help in resolving many issues of high importance for the country.

While focusing on the regional issues, Prime Minister Gaston Browne and the Director General of UNESCO discussed the ways to protect and safeguard the cultural assets of the country, along with ways to enhance the educational sector, infrastructure, technologies and artificial intelligence.

The PM was quoted saying, “The development of Artificial Intelligence has been a budding concept in the field of Artificial Intelligence, following which, it has become necessary for the countries to carry an autonomous approach towards its adaptation. On the other hand, multilateral diplomacy institutions such as UNESCO have a crucial role to play in this area.”

This productive and essential meeting was also attended by Ambassador of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States to the World Trade Organisation – Colin Murdoch, Deputy Permanent Delegate for Antigua and Barbuda – Timothée Bauer.
