The 15 G4S workers of the Grantley Adams International Airport paused working for the sake of their health due to the unbearable heat. The main reason behind this is the poor working conditions caused by the malfunctioning air conditioning system.
While expressing concern, the Barbados Worker Union stated that it is a significant issue which has been severely affecting the health and well-being of the G4S security personnels. They stated that this incident has taken place during a shift change, affecting workers from both the incoming and outgoing shifts.
The BWU appreciated that the workers and stated that it is their unwavering commitment and dedication that they dealt with this problem for over a year. However, the situation became very difficult for the workers to tolerate therefore, they decided to pause their work with a vision to prioritize their health.
The Barbados Worker Union has also urged the management of the Grantley Adams International Airport to take preventive measures and actions to fix the air conditioning system in the area. They noted as the hotter months are approaching, it is likely that the condition may worsen therefore, they stated that the action is necessary to be taken in order to avoid this problem and putting anyone’s life at risk.
The Union stated that these complaints have also come from the members at Duty-Free Caribbean as well as customs. Therefore, they have asked the management of the Grantley Adams International Airport to take measures to prioritize the health and safety of all the workers by resolving this issue without any further delay.
They stated that they are standing firmly with the G4S workers and will continue to work for their rights and well-being. Noting to it, the Grantley Adams International Airport also shared a message and stated they are aware of the reports that are circulating that there is a disruption at the Airport that will impact passengers.
The airport stated that they are committed to ensuring a safe, secure and seamless travel experience for all the passengers. They noted that they will continue to operate all the flight services without any delay and that access to their scheduled flights will proceed as planned.
Notably, Grantley Adams International Airport is an international airport at Barbados and serve as the country’s only port of entry by air. The BWU stated that all the workers are making their unwavering efforts daily to work for the safe travel of the passengers despite the challenging conditions. Therefore, they asked the airport authority to provide a safe and comfortable working environment.
