West Indies out of ICC T20 World Cup 2024, New Zealand to face South Africa in Finals

The West Indies women’s team concluded their campaign in the ICC International T20 World Cup 2024 with a defeat of 8 runs against New Zealand. After a long wait of 14 years, New Zealand has returned to the finals of the T20 World Cup final and is all set to clash against South Africa women’s in Dubai on Sunday, 20^th October, 2024.

The match between New Zealand and West Indies was started with the former winning the toss and deciding to bat first. The openers of the New Zealand, Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer made a steady start in the Powerplay but failed to accelerate in the middle overs and got out in 26 and 33 runs respectively.

The little contribution from players, Sophie Devine, Brooke Halliday and Izzy Gaze helped the team in leading to the total of 128 runs with 9 wickets down. The bowling section of the West Indies women’s team remained excellent throughout the first innings. As, Deandra Dottin showcased her magic and led the charge with four wickets to her name, by giving away only 22 runs.

Needing 128 runs to win in 20 overs seemed easy for the team. However, the bowlers of New Zealand displayed remarkable bowling performance throughout their second innings. With the double breakthrough of Qiana Joseph and Shemaine Campbelle, the New Zealand team put pressure on the West Indies.

Also, Deandra Dottin of Windies made every possible effort to lead the team towards victory, playing the knock at a strike rate of 150. However, she was ultimately caught out by Fran Jonas in Amelia Kerr delivery, scoring 33 runs in just 22 balls and hitting 3 sixes.

West Indies needed 14 runs in the final over and Suzie Bates was given the opportunity to deliver that crucial over. She stands on the trust raised by her Captain and led her team, New Zealand, into the finals for the first time since 2010.

The Captain of the West Indies Women’s team, Hayley Matthews expressed disappointment at losing the game. She praised her entire team for their excellent performances throughout the tournament.
