UN Trinidad and Tobago extends thanks to CARICOM on 50th anniversary

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: UN Trinidad and Tobago wished the public on the 50th anniversary of the Caribbean Community: CARICOM. It also expressed thank you towards the community for continuous support and dedicated work.

According to the update by the Facebook page of UN Trinidad and Tobago, the official visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Trinidad and Tobago for the Opening Ceremony of the 45th Conference of the Heads of Government for CARICOM took place from Sunday, July 2, to Tuesday, July 4.

It furthermore informed that on Sunday, Guterres visited the Asa Wright Nature Centre, where he saw some of the biodiversity of Trinidad and Tobago and learned about the important conservation work happening in the Arima Valley, a valuable area for carbon capture.

It also outlined, “Our team at UNDP Trinidad and Tobago has partnered with the Centre to install ultra-low-carbon air conditioning units through a grant from Global Environment Facility.”

Along with this, on Monday, he held a fruitful bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Keith Rowley and re-iterated the UN’s commitment to peace in Haiti, the reform of the international financial system to better support the Small Island States and the adaptation and mitigation needs of Caribbean countries to boost their resilience to the climate crisis.

It informed that he also congratulated Trinidad and Tobago on the successful election of its candidate, Ambassador Dennis Francis, to the Presidency of the upcoming 78th session of the UN General Assembly. He later met with UN staff and Heads of Agencies responsible for our work in Trinidad and Tobago.

In conclusion, it stated that on the margins of the CARICOM gathering, the Secretary-General held a bilateral with the Prime Minister of South Korea, Han Duck-soo. Guterres was also one of the speakers at the CARICOM opening ceremony and later had a working session with CARICOM Heads of Government.
