Seniors gathered to celebrate World Food Day Beach Aerobics at Frigate Bay Beach

Seniors from across St Kitts and Nevis participated in “World Food Day Beach Aerobics” by gathering at Frigate Bay Beach. This initiative was conducted with a vision to empower older adults with knowledge about marine ecosystems while fostering healthy living through mental and physical activity.

This initiative was undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources of St Kitts and Nevis in collaboration with the Department of Youth Empowerment, Ageing, and Disabilities and the Department of Marine Resources.

While shedding light on this beach aerobics session, the Ministry of Agriculture noted that it is a unique twist on the traditional World Food Day celebrations. As, this commemoration featured several senior people participating in guided exercises along the shoreline.

The main motive of the Ministry behind this initiative was not only to promote ocean awareness, but also to host several activities for the elder people aiming to enhance their mental and physical well-being.

The Ministry asserted that all these activities were hosted by them with their primary focus of enhancing physical mobility, mental well-being, and fostering a sense of community.

Moreover, this initiative also included an educational component, highlighting the crucial role played by the ocean in sustaining life and promoting nutrition.

The Chair of the 2024 World Food Day committee and Port Control Officer at the Department of Marine Resources, Maritza Queeley, guided the seniors and educated them about the significance of oceans.

She added that ocean is not just a source of recreation but also a provider of essential food resources. She also exchanged significant dialogues on the contribution of seafood towards global nutrition, emphasizing the rich variety of fish and marine life, rich in proteins, and vitamins.

The Marine Officer also shed light on the environmental challenges that are threatening marine ecosystems such as overfishing, pollution, and climate change. Along with that, she also shared a balanced diet that can be followed by all the seniors, ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

She also extended invitation to all the attendees to join the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources of St Kitts and Nevis on Friday, 18th October, 2024 for the Fish Fry and Seafood Competition.

This event will take place at the Old Road Fisheries Depot and gather all the expert chefs of the East Basseterre community and neighbourhood cooks together to bring their tasty talents to the event.
