Prez Ali stated Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon requires to own up to his error, come clean to his supporters, and stop spreading falsehood rumors about the legitimacy of the government.
“There are essential steps in undoing some of the wrongs that were done when the nation’s democracy was under an attack during the attempted rigging of the 2020-national elections,” Prez Ali added.
The Head of State made the comments while replying to questions from the media about the administration’s collaboration with the opposition at the opening ceremony of the two-day Guyana Police Force (GPF) Annual Conference.
“He [Harmon] has accountability to his followers to come clean now; how long are you going to continue on this road, how long are you going to continue to downplay the truth and sell a narrative that is completely filled with such falsehood rumors. The hardest thing in life is to recognize that you have made a mistake, to own up to that mistake, and then to say that listen, I own up to this mistake, but let’s move forward.”
The President stated that he is open to talks with the opposition, pointed out that it is impossible for the administration and opposition to move forward if the legitimacy of the Government continues to be undermined.
Moreover, he added, “I am saying to you now that the Leader of the Opposition needs to recognize the Government with the President and I don’t want no implicit recognition, and he must go out publicly and say, the government is legitimate, and he recognizes the Government, the president, and then let’s talk.
Furthermore, Prez Ali added, “I am ready to speak to all Guyanese, and I’ve been doing that; the question is, is the Opposition leader ready to speak to the legitimate leader of the nation.”
President Ali stated that if Harmon truly cares about the growth of Guyana, he will do the right thing.
“The Opposition Leader has a choice, you know. Let me be very clear on this, and he has a choice. Sometimes we all have to decide what is foolhardy and what we really want to gain. I don’t know what the bubble he is living in, but I am sure the Opposition leader is well aware, like the rest of the world, that he trampled upon democracy and then whilst the whole world celebrated the triumph of democracy. with the opening of a democratically legitimately elected regime, he still seems to be wallowing….”
The President has repeatedly added that his main concerns are nation-building and the enhancement of the lives of all people. He again added that he wants to develop a nation that benefits all of its people.
“Listen, as I have said on several occasions before this, I want a Guyana for all Guyanese. He wants a Guyana that is better for people of the Opposition, that is better for masses of the media, that is better for the sugar operators, that is better for the bauxite operators, that is better for the public servants; I want a Guyana that is better for everyone,” Prez Ali stated.
