PM Terrance Drew addresses nation on 41st Independence with vision for future development

The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew addressed the nation on the prestigious occasion of the 41st Independence Day of the nation and expressed his pride and honour being the representative of the thriving Caribbean country. The nation, already reaching new heights under his guidance, is now looking forward to witness many more developments of global standards.

St Kitts and Nevis celebrated their 41st anniversary of Independence on 19th September, 2024 under the theme “Together, a People, Proud and Strong: Independence 41.”

While addressing the nation, PM Terrance Drew stated that whenever the topic of Independence sparks, the word “Freedom” naturally springs to his mind. He further added that freedom does not only restrict to any individual, but on a broader perspective it also aligns with the nation.

Thus, the Prime Minister with his Ministers looks forward to upgrade the countries infrastructure in every aspect, be it agriculture, economic, education, or be it the safety standards of the island nation.

AGRICULTURE

While shedding light on the development of the agriculture sector, PM Terrance Drew stated that as he is standing on the grounds of Bayford’s estate in Saint Peter’s Parish, it reminds him of the transformation of this property from being a symbol of bondage to a centre for agriculture, innovation and sustainability.

He asserted that from this vintage point, freedom has taken a life on its own. PM Terrance Drew noted that the spectacular views of Basseterre and the surrounding communities with the beloved sister Isle of Nevis in the background evoke thoughts of their endless possibilities that lie ahead for the people and the nation.

He mentioned that the property which was once a symbol of bondage has been transformed into a centre for agriculture, innovation and sustainability. PM Drew stated that this transformation is a beacon of the island nation’s drive to achieve food security and reduce their dependence on imports.

The Prime Minister further continued to say that this transformation is also a step undertaken by the government towards their commitment of achieving their agenda of reducing food imports bill by 25% by 2025.

CRIME

Moreover, PM Drew added that this independence is not just about economic or agricultural self-sufficiency, but also an assurance of providing safe and secure environment to all the residents of the nation. He stated that it is every citizen’s responsibility to maintain and sustain all the freedoms that everyone enjoys.

He asserted that in the recent years and especially over the past decade, they have seen a troubling rise in gun related crimes. He mentioned that this epidemic of violence has resulted in claiming the lives of several young men and women by senseless acts of brutality.

He called all these criminal acts “a direct assault on the freedom of the citizen”.

PM Terrance Drew noted that it is not just the responsibility of the government or the police to fight against crime or violence, but every citizen of this nation to create a safer and more peaceful St Kitts and Nevis.

“I believe in the resilience, strength, and spirit of the people of this nation. Together, we can overcome the scourge of violence and build a brighter, safer future for all of our people,” noted PM Terrance Drew.

ECONOMIC GROWTH

The Prime Minister, Dr Terrance Drew stated that since the time, he has taken up the leadership in August 2022, he has always prioritized economic growth, wage equity, and the empowerment of the people and especially the youth.

PM Drew stated that in the last year, their administration has reached significant milestones that shed light on their steadfast commitment to improving the lives of the people. He noted that from January 1, 2024, the Government has raised the national minimum wage from $360 per week to $430 per week, which is possibly the highest in the CARICOM region.

The Prime Minister also mentioned about recognizing an invaluable contribution of the public servants in the nation’s progress. And, for the same, the authorities implemented an 8% salary increase to empower the people with land ownership.

They also reduced the interest rate on residential lands from 12% to 6% annually, making it more accessible for people to own a piece of the beloved island of St Kitts and Nevis.

The administration has also increased the social security pension from $430 to $500 per month, ensuring that elderly who have contributed to the nation can live with greater dignity and comfort. The government has also reinstated gratuity payments to retired government auxiliary employees, right in a historic wrong committed by the last administration and honouring those who have served with dedication.

FUTURE PROJECTS

The Prime Minister, Dr Terrance Drew stated that their government is continuing to make efforts in order to transform the nation into a truly independent, developed and peaceful nation where every people can thrive.

He stated that all this progress is being made in order to enhance the lives of the citizens in unprecedented positive ways.

While highlighting the upcoming projects, the Prime Minister stated that in the coming years, the St Kitts and Nevis will witness the completion of a modern MRI center at JNF General Hospital, new honorary football stadium, Saint Peter’s main road.

Along with that, the authorities will also mark the continuation of the construction of a new Climate Smart General Hospital, new Bastia High School, Joshua Obediah Williams Primary School, completion of the, and the development of new climate smart housing solutions.
