PM Drew acknowledges unsung heroes of constituency 8 for contributing towards sustainability

Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew hosted the 4th edition of the Annual Dinner and Awards ceremony at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel in Frigate Bay on Saturday, 27th April 2024. The event was conducted with a motive to recognize the contribution by the unsung heroes of Constituency 8 who are making constant efforts to lead their nation towards making the country a sustainable island state.

The event was also attended by several leaders of the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party. The leaders who attended the event include Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, Minister of Foreign Affairs of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Denzil Douglas, Minister of Agriculture, Sports, Samal Duggins, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy, Konris G Maynard and Minister of Tourism, Marsha Henderson and many others.

PM Terrance Drew welcomed all the leaders, awardees and citizens of Constituency 8 and addressed the ceremony as “critically important.” He stated that “it takes a community to make sure that community is healthy. Not even one person can do it by him or herself and therefore their contribution must be recognized.”

Prime Minister Drew also added that it is very important to highlight the people from the community who have contributed and are continuing to contribute for the advancement of various sectors of the island nation.

He further stated that there are several unsung heroes who may not be recognised in any other forum or event, yet their contribution is something without which the community cannot thrive. So we have decided to host Annual Dinner and Awards ceremony to honour the real heros of our nation.

The leader of the nation also highlighted the theme of the ceremony “Nation Building through sustainable initiatives” and stated that every awardee of the event in his or her way contributed to the sustainable development of Constituency 8 on the country as a whole.

Moreover, PM Drew also stated that all the citizens can play a crucial role in developing various sectors of the island nation be it, tourism, energy, medical and many more. It is that a resident needs to find out in which sphere he can add on and suits him the best.

“You don’t need government to tell you what to do. You don’t want government to necessarily lead you. We have set the national agenda but you and your own community can determine what you can do for sustainable development,” noted Dr Terrance Drew.

He also shared several measures that can be implemented to promote sustainability in the island nation. He advised that if somebody likes to clean, they can keep the environment clean and tell people not to litter around. They can make usage of less non-renewable sources such as plastics and so forth to keep the environment safe and secure.

He further advised that if somebody is using water excessively, they should cut back on the amount of water usage. Also, one should always turn off the electricity when not in use.

He also highlighted the devastating effects that island nation is facing due to climate change, he said: “as we face the scourge of climate change, it can become tougher, it will become difficult at times, but I believe there is hope and we have what it takes in order to deal with discourage.”

Therefore, he requested all the citizens of constituency 8 to join the government to sustain St. Kitts and Nevis. He also stated that every citizen can play a significant role in sustaining the island nation.

Gatherings like these showcase the leadership of Dr. Drew and his vision of taking along the countrymen in the growth of St. Kitts and Nevis.
