‘You Central Africans must open your eyes’ says President Touadera

CAR Elections 2020: On Friday, the United Nations confirmed that Anonymous’ armed combatants’ have killed three Burundian peacekeepers in the Central African Republic (CAR) elections.

UN Authorities confirmed that these attacks happened in Dekoa, central Kemo prefecture, and in Bakouma, southern Mbomou prefecture on UN peacekeepers. The attackers arrived in the campaign as a voter. This attack influenced terror among other citizens. 

Due to this, President Faustin-Archange Touadera urged people to come out and vote. He requested voters to come out and vote without fear on Sunday, and “They are trying to come to Bangui, You Central Africans must open your eyes, Help our armed forces, UN peacekeepers MINUSCA, those from Rwanda and Russia, They are giving us a hand. Don’t let those armed fighters come into the city again.”

Several oppositions party got petrified by these attacks and left the battlefield of voting. They all are demanding a delay in the election so that these attack will not proceed further, but the question is “Will these attacks will be stopped if there is a delay in the election?”

On Wednesday, The Human Rights Watch (HRW) confirmed, “at least five civilians have been killed while the UN added, “more than 55,000 people have fled their homes for fear of attacks, including intentionally killing civilians, raping women and girls, and willfully destroying civilian property”. 

In this context, a fellow at the Africa Programme Paul Melly asserted that “the CAR government was not likely to agree to CPC’s demands and delay the vote. The United Nations, MINUSCA and the government have put a huge effort into organising in mobilising the electoral process.” 

He added, “They got everybody registered, they have been circulating or starting to disseminate voter cards, a lot of people in Bangui want to go ahead and execute their right to vote.”
