Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a ‘Yellow’ alert for the marine services and dust haze for the people of the Federation. The advisory has been issued due to the cold frontal trough and the increase in Saharan Dust passing through the island.

Since last week, Barbados has been experiencing long periods of northerly swells and breaking waves along the coastlines. The forecasters warned the citizens that breaking wave action could heighten around the high tide.

As per the Dust Haze Forecast, a layer of slight dust haze will be visible across the island.

The marine is forecasted to remain moderate in the open water with north swells spanning from 1.5 to 2.0 meters, which is equal to 5 to 7 feet and could be decreasing. The weather forecasters advised sea bathers and small craft operators to exercise caution while dipping into the water.

Beachgoers are urged to use lifeguard stations, especially on the beaches along the island’s western coastlines.

Moreover, the Trinidad-based Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) suggested people protect themselves against the adverse health effects of a Saharan Dust plume covering many parts of the Caribbean, including Barbados.

“Saharan dust worsens air quality and increases the levels of particulate matter in the air”, warned CARPHA executive director- Dr Joy St John.

Citizens are advised to practice the following measures to tackle the conditions of marine and Saharan dust

– One should wear a face mask while going out

– People having allergies, sinuses, and asthma should take care of themselves and avoid getting out of their premises

– People should keep inhalers with them in case of difficult breathing

– Should contact or visit medical practitioners in case of difficult breathing

– Beachgoers and fishermen should use lifeguards to keep themselves safe from the overflow of the water

– Small vessels should be avoided as they cannot handle the pressure of high waves

Additionally, people may experience a mix of sunshine and clouds with a few brief isolated light showers, and a slight dust haze will be visible across the island. Notably, as per the synopsis, the Atlantic high-pressure system will remain the dominant feature.
