Why SLP calls PM Chastanet as ‘Trumpian clone’? Explained!

Saint Lucia: Saint Lucia Labour Party posted a commentary about Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Allen Chastanet, on assaulting nation’s Capitol. H.E has written this commentary.

The Author claim that the UWP Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has been Trumpian himself in striking St. Lucia’s democracy and assailing the Parliament of Saint Lucia. According to the SLP, “Donald Trump had been planting the seeds of lawlessness in the U.S. by disrespecting the democratic standards and constitutional conventions of his country.”

Why the author claims PM Chastanet as ‘Trumpian clone’?

In keeping with the ‘Trumpian clone’ that he is, Allen Chastanet, from his first month in office, dismissed the St. Lucia constitution when he assembled the first meeting of Parliament after the 2016 usual elections, one week later than the time mandated by Section 54(1) of the St. Lucia Constitution Order. 

The author claims that Prime Minister Allen Chastanet and his Government have consistently slammed legislation through Parliament in one-day sittings, and generally at midnight. However, the Constitution grants for three separate versions of a Bill at three different meetings by the Parliament before it is passed. 

According to SLP, Allen Chastanet has not cared for this and has preferred to extinguish public consideration and scrutiny of our laws. There is a body of opinion that what happened in the Senate that day was unlawful and undemocratic. At the very least, it demonstrated Chastanet’s absolute disdain for views contrary to his and the democratic process of public consultation. In all of the instances described above, Chastanet’s actions are assaults on Saint Lucian’s democracy.

People have reacted to this article; a Facebook user commented, “What a response…A woman who called for explosives in Parliament, a woman who posted a few years ago and quickly deleted that the government should be removed by force, a woman who now calls for Parliament to be the St Lucian Capitol Hill, you all trying to spin it. if it was just one single post with violent intent, but I can count three, SAN DON BRATT.” However, St Lucians praised Allen Chastanet for his deeds. Citizens believe in the work of Allen Chastanet.
