St Kitts and Nevis resumes land payments allocated lands in 2020-2021 from July 13

Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: The payment for the citizens and residents of St Kitts and Nevis who were allocated lands in the years 2020 and 2021 will be resumed from July 13, 2023 (Thursday) as per the announcement by Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew.

As per the government update, the payments will be resumed by the Ministry of Sustainable Development of St Kitts and Nevis. The announcement was made by the Minister of Sustainable Development – Dr Joyelle Clarke, during the Cabinet Minister’s Press Conference on July 13. The conference was hosted at the NEMA Conference Room.

Minister Clarke was quoted saying that the Treasury will resume payments for the citizens whose lands were allocated up to December 2020. Furthermore, she outlined that the people who were allocated lands in 2021 should submit their properly surveyed documents to the Ministry, and the payment status must also be checked with the Ministry, following which they can proceed to the Treasury.

In addition to this, she informed the general public that the resumption of payments for the St Kittitians whose lands were allocated in 2022 is not confirmed by the government and Ministry. Dr Clarke further said that the Ministry has been working to find out a solution to the major challenges related to the land distribution during that year which includes double and triple allocations and allocations to lots which do not exist.

However, she also hinted that the land allocation will re-commence in August 2023. The Minister of Sustainable Development Clarke further said that Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew will make announcements on the improvement and changes of the process.

The Minister further shifted her focus on the other initiatives by the Ministry of Sustainable Development. Dr Clarke stated that the Ministry has been running initiatives which deal with the distribution, normalization and allocation of the lands across the nation.

She said, “The Ministry of Sustainable Development works continuously to the mandate of the empowerment of citizens through land ownership and its updated land initiative, which has sought to document, assess and restructure the process of land allocation and land use in St Kitts and Nevis.”
