Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: The Government of St Kitts and Nevis, under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew, reinstated payment of gratuity to scores of retired Government Auxilliary Employees (GAEs) on June 12, 2023 (Monday).
The GAEs will be granted to the citizen or resident who was in service for a minimum of 10 years and whose gratuity was not granted when Dr Timothy Harris was the Prime Minister of the Federation.
According to the government of St Kitts and Nevis, the gratuity practice was discontinued in the year 2021. Because of this discontinuation, around sixty (60) St Kittitians and Nevisians were impacted. Further, the government mentioned that outstanding balances were calculated by the Human Resource Management Department, along with the Department of Accountant General.
As per the statics stated by Prime Minister, as much as $700,000 remained to be paid out, verified by the Director of Audit.
Prime Minister Drew expressed his gratitude and thankfulness towards the GAEs for their continuous hard work and tireless working.
Prime Minister desired to ensure that, for those of the citizens who are currently GAEs, the benefit of what is rightfully theirs is not taken away ever again after a minimum of ten years has been contributed.
“I want to express my gratitude to all the workers of St Kitts and Nevis. Some of you who are part of GAE may feel like you are treated as second-class workers, and I understand that. As an administration that has been advocating for workers’ rights since 1932, we are actively working to improve your work conditions, enhance your quality of life, and provide you with the best opportunities to lead a fulfilling life here in St Kitts and Nevis. We are committed to being at the forefront of this battle for you,” Prime Minister Dr Drew said.
