Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: The Government of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis has recently announced that the Department of the Creative Economy will be officially launched on July 28, 2023 (Friday).
It has been informed to the general public that the major focus of the newly launched department will be providing a platform to the people engaged in the creative sector so that they can showcase and market their talents. The government has also anticipated that this initiative would make the orange economy of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis.
This announcement was made by Samal Duggins, the Minister of the Creative Economy of St Kitts and Nevis, during the first-ever press conference hosted on July 11, 2023, at the Marriott Resort in St Kitts and Nevis.
During the press conference, the Minister mentioned that the authorities who were brainstorming the idea and concept of enhancement of the creative sector of St Kitts and Nevis are glad to see how envisioning this move can be turned out. Minister Duggins outlined that the department will work to ensure that the people of the Federation actively benefit the creative sector from their creativity and art.
The Minister was quoted saying that people usually interpret this sector as ‘hobbyist’ and this department will work to change the mindset of the general public. He added that this is why it was decided that the suitable name for the department will be ‘Creative Economy,’ which will highlight the economic value of art as well as creativity.
During this event, Minister Samal Duggins also took the opportunity to introduce the director of the department. As per the announcement made by the Minister, Roberitine Webbe will serve as the director of the Department of Creative Economy.
While introducing Webbe, he stated that she has “a clear vision and understanding of where we want to go, and all the skill sets to take us there.”
As per the reports, during the initial hours of the press conference, the public was informed about around ten (10) creative sectors, including film and media, performing arts, visual arts and craft, tradition bearers, literary arts, culinary arts, cosmetic arts, gaming and innovation, service providers and arts administration.
