Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: Premier of Nevis and the leader of the opposition of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis – Mark Brantley, wished the people of the Dominican Republic living local and abroad a very happy Independence Day on February 27, 2023.
The Dominican Republic celebrates its Independence Day on February 27 each year. This national holiday is a commemoration of the country’s independence from Haiti in 1844. The day is marked by a range of cultural events, parades, and fireworks displays, all aimed at celebrating the country’s rich history and culture. It is a Caribbean country that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. The island was first colonized by the Spanish in the late 15th century, and the Dominican Republic remained a Spanish colony until the 19th century. In 1804, Haiti declared its independence from France and subsequently invaded the Dominican Republic. The people of the country fought against the Haitian occupation for over two decades until finally gaining their independence on February 27, 1844.
Independence Day celebrations in the Dominican Republic are steeped in tradition and history. The day begins with ceremonial flag-raising, where the national flag is raised in the capital city, Santo Domingo, and other major cities across the country. This is followed by a military parade featuring members of the Dominican Armed Forces, who march through the streets in full-dress uniforms.
One of the highlights of the Independence Day celebrations is the Carnaval Dominicano, a colourful and vibrant street parade that takes place in Santo Domingo and other major cities. The parade features dancers in elaborate costumes, live music, and street performers, all celebrating the country’s rich cultural heritage. The Carnaval Dominicano is a spectacle not to be missed and attracts visitors from all over the world.
In addition to the festivities, many Dominicans also use Independence Day to reflect on the country’s history and the struggles that their ancestors faced to gain independence. It is a time to honour the bravery and resilience of those who fought for their freedom and to celebrate the country’s accomplishments since gaining independence.
The Dominican Republic is a country with a rich history and a vibrant culture, and Independence Day is a time for Dominicans to come together to celebrate their national identity and pride. Whether it’s watching the military parade, attending the Carnaval Dominicano, or simply spending time with family and friends, the day is a reminder of the importance of unity, resilience, and the fight for freedom.
