Police encounter leaves one injured in Couva, Trinidad

Trinidad and Tobago:  One of the two suspects from Couva sustained gunshot injuries during a shootout with police in the Lang Park district. Officers from the Major Crimes Unit from North Central Division seized firearms and ammunition from the suspects.

While conducting an intelligence-led exercise in Central Division, the police officers were informed about the individuals seen with firearms in Lange Park district. When they arrived at the location, they intercepted a white Nissan Tiida motor vehicle, where two men were sited.

One of the suspects tried to flee from the car but was caught by investigating officers a short distance away. According to reports, the person has been identified as a 25-year-old man from Chaguanas.

Notably, another suspect sitting in the driver’s seat pointed a gun at law enforcement officers. In accordance with the Use-of-Force policy, police fired several shots in the direction of the vehicle.

The prompt shooting of the suspect helped the police to arrest him. He was identified as a 30-year-old man, who was resided in Couva. The accused sustained injuries, following which he was taken to Chaguanas Health Facility.

Subsequently, the 30-year-old was shifted to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where he remains in a stable condition under police custody. Such quick responses and efforts of the police officers reflect upon their unwavering dedication and commitment towards the citizen’s security. They are receiving appreciation from the people of the country for their hard work and awareness on the social media.

Recently, the Ministry of National Security has completed the first batch of the installation of 181 surveillance cameras in the country to improve the crime detention rate, which stands at 34 per cent.

The Head of the Tobago Police Division, ACP Collis Hazel shared that they are looking for more collaboration where citizens and business community will get the opportunity to install cameras at their homes and business places to tackle the problem of crime.
