St Kitts and Nevis: The crop farmers in St Kitts and Nevis have received the required material which can provide support in mitigating the challenges that are caused by climate change.

The Department of Agriculture’s Drought Resilience Irrigation Project (DRIP) aims at enhancing water security to help farmers and the country to become readily prepared to meet the challenges caused by the climate change.

The material received under the courtesy includes rolls of ground cover, Box Staples, Fertilizer, shut-off valves, Rolls of the submarine, rolls of wire, a solar energizer, Solar wire, Water tanks, and Fencing wire.

All such material marks a great step towards DRIP initiative. The initiative will even help to boost crop production as the Ministry of Agriculture is on a journey to reduce the food import bill by 25%. And, the deadline for this has been mentioned 2025.

In simple words, the agenda of 25 by 25 directs towards the decrease of imports by 25% till 2025. Even the Prime Minister emphasized the farmers as instrumental to achieve this goal.

Considerably, St Vincent and Grenadines provided the imports of 9000 tissue-cultured banana and Pineapple plants. From this, 3000 were of banana plants and 6000 were of pineapple plants. This contributes greatly towards meeting the 25 by 25 agenda.

The received plants even contribute to the increase in crop production as highlighted in the plans of the Ministry of Agriculture in achieving CARICOM’s 25% by the projected deadline of 2025.

Under this, the crop farmers were also presented with certificates from the Department of Agriculture, which further solidified the partnership in the venture.

The 25 by 25 agenda is for the purpose of food security. Similarly, the material provided will lead to the same as it will provide support in mitigating climate change issues. Both will foster food security.
