Roseau, Dominica: The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit extended congratulations to the participants who represented the Nature Island in Paris Olympics. He wished them best wishes and success for their future endeavours.
Notably, four athletes were headed to Paris for Olympics 2024 and represented their nation in different sports at the international platform. The athletes who participated in the Paris Olympics include, Thea Lafond, Dennick Luke, Jasmine Schofield and Warren Lawrence.
The Prime Minister lauded them for their participation and stated that they are the pride of the country. He further asserted that these athletes gave their more than 100% on the field and he is exceptionally proud of their efforts and achievements despite the results.
Thea Lafond
Thea Lafond represented Dominica in the Women’s Triple Jump and won the first-ever Olympic Gold medal for her country. She made a winning jump of 15.02 meters and represented the best jump for 2024 to clinch the gold medal for her nation. Her victory is a huge source of inspiration for all the athletes out there who aspire to represent their nation on a global stage. She celebrated her victory, draping into her nation’s flag, holding lots of emotions and pride.
Dennick Luke
Dennick Luke represented Dominica in the 800m race, and this was her 2nd consecutive Olympic games. He set a national record in the Men’s 800m, but his dreams of making it to the semi-finals of the Men’s 800-meter event at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games were shattered as he came up short in his attempt to qualify for it. He ran a time of 1 minute 47.54 seconds in heat number 4, which was his personal best but not quick enough to get him into the top 3 qualification spots.
Jasmine Schofield
Jasmine became the first female swimmer to represent Dominica since 2000. She swam a personal best 29.91 seconds in the women’s 50-meter freestyle to finish in 3rd place in her meet. She had the previous personal best timing of 30.26 seconds. Despite setting a new record and a good display of her performance in the time, her time was not fast enough to get her through the next round.
Lawrence became the first Dominican swimmer who represented the island nation in the Olympics since 2000. He narrowly missed qualifying for the semi-finals in the Men’s 50m heats at the Paris Olympic Games 2024. He swam a time of 24.67 seconds in heat number 4 and finished at the 5th spot.
PM Skerrit stated their performance in the Olympics 2024 is a testament to their unwavering commitment and dedication towards their passion and sports. He continued to say that he is extremely happy to see the sports sector developing and has ensured to take several measures to elevate it to greater heights.
