St Lucia: The Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has gone to Mexico for attending the 6th Summit of – Heads of State and the Government of Community of Latin American and the Caribbean States – (CELAC) on Saturday, September 18th, 2021.
Prime Minister will return back to the island on Monday, September 20th; until then, Dr Ernest Hilare will be the interim Prime Minister of St Lucia.
The primary purpose of this meeting – will be to robust the regional anti-COVID-19 pandemic coalition which was established in January 2020.
This coalition focuses on health self-sufficiency, economic recovery, and international cooperation that will place Latin America and the Caribbean as significant players on the global platform.
About CELAC –
CELAC is a regional alliance that proposes to unite, strengthen, and promote the interests of Latin American and Caribbean states. It is a replacement of the Rio Group and the 2nd Latin American and Caribbean Summit on Integration and Development (CALC).
It was established on December 3rd 2011. The member states of CELAC are – Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Dominica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Co-operative Republic of Guyana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Jamaica, Paraguay, Peru, St Lucia, Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, St Vincent & the Grenadines Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela.
The summit of Heads of State & Government body is responsible for appointing the next state to serve as – Pro Tempore Presidency and to host the following meeting, adopting procedures & various strategies to guide the relations with nations outside of CELAC and other international and regional organizations; approving modifications of procedures; establishing action plans; and promoting citizens’ participation in the organization.
