Myanmar leader Suu Kyi sentenced for 4 years of imprisonment

The expelled leader of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been sentenced to four years of imprisonment under the natural disasters law for breaching the COVID-19 protocols and inciting dissent.  

The Myanmar leader has been totally charged with 11 counts, which all have been denied by her.  

Since a military coup that took place in the month of February, Suu Kyi has been put under house arrest, and yet it has not been cleared when she will be placed in prison.   

Along with Suu Kyi, Co-defendant – Win Myint, the former president and National League for Democracy (NLD) party ally, was also pleaded guilty to the similar charges under which Suu Kyi has been put for four years. 

The next hearing of the Myanmar leader will take place on December 14, 2021, where she will be facing a charge of possessing illegal walkie-talkies.  

Not only this but the 76-year-old leader has also been put under several charges, including – corruption and violating the official secrets act. 

Earlier, she was also found guilty for the charge of breaking the COVID-19 restrictions, where she waved at her group of supporters (while wearing the face shield and mask) during the election campaigning of the previous year. 

The spokesperson of the recently formulated National Unity Government earlier told the media that Suu Kyi is struggling, adding, “She is not okay, the military generals are preparing for 104 years of sentences for her in prison. They want her to die in prison“.   

The military alleged that there was a fraud during the last general elections of Myanmar, in which NLD – National League for Democracy registered a historic win.  

As per the monitoring group Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, since the month of February, the military has detained around 10,600 individuals, whereas approximately 1,303 have been killed in the protest.
