Castries, Saint Lucia: The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs shares some guidelines to stay safe in the Flu Season. The Ministry observed a concerning rise in hospitalizations and fatalities due to COVID-19 and Influenza.

It is to be noted that they have recorded three deaths from January 15 to 25, 2024, due to the rapid increase of COVID-19 and Influenza.

Some of the measures which can help citizens to prevent the spread of flu are as follows,

  1. Boost Immune System: People are advised to eat healthily and stay hydrated. Proper and consistent exercise is required, and the Ministry urged the public to get 6-8 hours of sleep.

2. Avoid Close Contact: The most vulnerable groups identified are the elderly, individuals with chronic health conditions, and those who remain unvaccinated. Due to this, nationals and visitors should avoid contact with others who have flu-like symptoms.

3. Avoid Touching: The Ministry advised people suffering from flu-like symptoms not to touch their eyes, nose, and mouth as it can make the condition worse.

Notably, one should be able to stop the spread of flu or any infections by following the below-mentioned measures.

– Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds

– Wear a mask, especially in crowded areas

– Stay home/ away from work and school if there are symptoms

– Cover the mouth while coughing or sneezing and disinfect surfaces regularly

– Ask about the flu vaccine and COVID vaccine at the nearest wellness centre

– Enhancing Sanitary Practices

Importantly, it is mandatory to wear masks, especially for individuals with chronic health conditions and in crowded areas. Facemasks are available at public health facilities.

Noting this, preparedness measures are underway, with hospitals on high alert to ensure the availability of necessary supplies, equipment, and medications.

The Ministry of Health notes in its remarks that PCR and rapid testing are being offered free of charge at various Wellness Centres, Polyclinics, and Community Hospitals.

Moreover, regional public health agencies are working actively to distribute essential precautions and vaccines to the people. Additionally, as the flu season ranging October to March, the Ministry encourages the public to take advantage of the free flu vaccine at Wellness Centres.
