St Vincent and the Grenadines: The Chevening has released the list of the students who will pursue their Master’s Degree through scholarship.
Meet the four lucky students from St Vincent and the Grenadines here:
Shernell Hadaway:
Shernell is a barrister-at-law and solicitor, legislative drafter, notary public and a certified mediator serving as the Legal Officer at SVG’s Medicinal Cannabis Authority. She has a keen interest in environmental sustainability.
Therefore, she is ecstatic about pursuing an MSc Climate Change and Environmental Policy at the University of Leeds. The impact of climate change is evident through its adverse effects, particularly on food security, threatening our existence.
Upon completion of her studies, armed with a wealth of knowledge and increased vigour, she will be aptly positioned to be a climate change advocate promoting climate action and resilience within SVG towards achieving food sustainability using legislative and policy initiatives.
Chevening will enable her part of the next generation of interdisciplinary professionals, who will recommend mitigation and adaptation measures suitable to local context. She believes that she will be better equipped to contribute to global policy negotiations to ensure food security in a more resilient SVG.
Nafesha Richardson:
Nafesha is the founder of Spark SVG, a youth-led organisation aimed at motivating young people in St Vincent and the Grenadines to ignite positive change in their communities.
Nafesha has a longstanding history of youth advocacy as a One Young World Ambassador, the Coordinator of the Commonwealth Youth Gender, and Equality Network (CYGEN), a 2020 Women Deliver Young Leader, a Youth Champion of the Escazú Agreement and host of the United Nations Girls Education Initiative (UNGEI) podcast.
She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus and a Legal Education Certificate (LEC) from the Hugh Wooding Law School.
Nafesha will be pursuing a Master of Laws (LLM) at the University College London. She hopes to use her degree to evaluate trade and investment law and policy at the national, regional, and international levels — later reforming and modernising SVG and the wider Eastern Caribbean’s approach to trade and investment to meet international standards.
Maxron Holder:
Maxron is a multi-faceted graduate from the University of the West Indies. As a Legal Professional, he wants to be an agent for change in the international economic relations of St Vincent and the Grenadines and the wider Caribbean Community.
Diversification of trading relations, attracting foreign investments in Agriculture, Tourism, Green Energy, and Infrastructure in the Caribbean are at the core of his career goals.
Thus, Maxron will be pursuing an LLM in International Economic Law at the University of Edinburgh. He also retains a strong interest in academia and aims to contribute to moulding the future generation of lawyers, as we respond to the legal challenges of the 21st century.
Shafique Sam:
Shafique is lover of history, music and culture and is a regionalist at heart. He’s passionate about the Caribbean, its heritage and development.
Currently, he’s employed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade (MOFA) in St Vincent and the Grenadines. In 2020, Shafique assumed the role of SVG CARICOM Youth Ambassador. In 2022 he became a member of the inaugural United Nations OECS and Barbados Youth Advisory Group.
Shafique will be pursuing an MSc in Economics, focusing on Development Economics. He hopes to return to St Vincent and the Grenadines and resume working in MOFA in the capacity of an economist. He intends to work with MOFA to bridge the gap between Foreign Policy, Economic Diplomacy, Economic Planning, and Sustainable Development — working particularly on projects regarding the blue economy and blue diplomacy.
