Jamaica to develop a new library in the country as the National Library of Jamaica received the donation of Can$939.72. With this amount, the Jamaica government would enhance the structural and functional level of libraries.
The statements about the contribution were told during the time of the online book launch that was being hosted by the Consulate General of Jamaica during Black History Month celebrations in February while he was in Toronto.
The book launched entitled “Enduring Advocacy for a Better Jamaica” has been written by Reverend Dr Devon Dick, Pastor for the Boulevard Baptist Church in Kingston, Reverend Dr. Devon Dick.
On Thursday, August 12, the state minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Leslie Campbell, handed over the cheque to the national librarian Beverley Lashley, at the Ministry’s downtown Kingston. He said that the donation is the step towards maintaining the very fine tradition of the National Library of Jamaica, which is Jamaica’s own gem.
Senator Campbell noted that Rev. Dick, who offered to donate the proceeds from the sale of his book, “appreciates the importance of the national library as an intangible aspect of Jamaica’s cultural heritage. We’re all about cultural heritage. We’re about Jamaica; so, it’s not necessarily only about books but also film or music, anything cultural. That’s what the national library is all about.”
Miss Lashley expressed her gratitude for getting support, and she encouraged the Jamaicans in the diaspora to invest in their country’s development and the establishment of the new national library building.
The book that was launched was in collaboration between the private and public sectors. This collaboration also includes the partners like McMaster University, Jamaica National, Victoria Mutual and GraceKennedy.
The National Library of Jamaica was established in 1979. Its purpose is to collect, document, preserve and facilitate access to the nation’s cultural heritage.
