Prime Minister of Jamaica – Andrew Holness, has recently shared an update regarding the newly launched penalties of the “Firearm Act, 2022”.

Jamaica: Prime Minister of Jamaica – Andrew Holness, has recently shared an update regarding the newly launched penalties of the “Firearm Act, 2022”.
According to the Prime Minister of the nation, the majority of the penalties will be if an individual will be:
•Trafficking a prohibited weapon
•Being in possession of prohibited weapons with the intent to
•Dealing with a prohibited weapon
•Prohibition on alteration of the ballistic signature
•Trafficking in firearms or ammunition without authorisation
•Possession with intent to traffic in firearm or ammunition
•Restriction on the manufacture of firearms or ammunition not in accordance with a Firearms Manufacturer’s License.
The penalties can be explained as:-
– Trafficking a prohibited weapon will penalise for life imprisonment, which may be eligible for parole after serving around 20 years.
– Possession of a prohibited weapon with intent to traffic will cause life imprisonment, which may be eligible for parole after serving around 20 years.
– Dealing with prohibited weapons will penalise life imprisonment, which may be eligible for parole after serving 20 years.
– Prohibition on alteration of ballistic signature, conversion of a firearm, or prohibited weapon will penalise life imprisonment, which may be eligible for parole after serving around 20 years.
– Possession of prohibited weapons penalises a term of imprisonment between 15 and 25 years.
– Possession of firearms or ammunition with intent to injure or cause severe damage to property causing with intent to injure: Life imprisonment may be eligible for parole after serving around 20 years.
– With intent to cause serious property damage will result in a term of imprisonment between 15 and 25 years.
– Stockpiling prohibited weapons will penalise life imprisonment and may be eligible for parole after serving 20 years.
– Restriction on dealing in firearms or ammunition without authorisation will cause life imprisonment.
– Restriction on testing of firearms or ammunition will cause life imprisonment.
– Unauthorised possession of firearms or ammunition (Before the Circuit Court) will penalise life imprisonment.
– Restriction on trafficking in firearms or ammunition without authorisation will penalise life imprisonment, eligible for parole after serving 15 years.
– Possession with intent to traffic in firearm or ammunition causing life imprisonment may be eligible for parole after serving 15 years.
– Restriction on the manufacture of firearms or ammunition not in accordance with a Firearm Manufacturer’s Licence penalising for life imprisonment.
