ICC-U19 2022 cricket tournament to be hosted by Caribbean countries

The Caribbean countries will host the ICC-Under19 Men’s Cricket Tournament next year, commencing from January 15 to 22, 2022.    

The tournament will be hosted in four Caribbean countries – St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, with 10 venues hosting regionally.

This tournament will be the 14th ICC-U19 cricket tournament, which will be the first time hosted in West Indies, witnessing sixteen teams participating in the tournament from around the globe.  

There will be forty-eight matches to be conducted in the cricket tournament in a time period of twenty-two days, out of which 18 matches would be conducted by St Kitts and Nevis. Four matches would be conducted in a single day over the 22 different venues in the host nations.

Teams to be hosted by St Kitts and Nevis: 

• Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe Papua New Guinea, Bangladesh, England, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Sri Lanka, Scotland & the West Indies.

The cricket teams would arrive on the Caribbean island on January 3, 2022, and the first warm-up match would take place on January 15, 2022. The warm-up venues of St Kitts and Nevis include – St Mary’s Park and Edgar Gilbert Sporting Complex, while practice sessions would take place – Warner Park Cricket Stadium and Conaree Cricket Centre as well as St. Pauls Sporting Complex.   

President of Cricket West Indies asserted, “What makes this tournament special is that it is the first time we are having a – tournament of this nature. It is under 19, but that is what makes it exciting as it is the future. Along with hosting the – tournament, we have to produce a team which will be a winning team”.  

While islands’ Sports Minister stated, “Come January, we are going to welcome world here to – St Kitts and Nevis to look at top-class cricket across five stunning venues. The government has recognized the importance of not just cricket but sport in general and in particular sports tourism; cricket, mainly because that, is our national sport here in the West Indies.

“We continue to do what we have to do to develop our own cricketers, and I am happy Mr Skerrit would have referred to the five players based on Nevis who have that opportunity to make that final team,” 

The island further cited that it will make sure that the tournament is held under COVID-19 guidelines and health protocols.
