Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Health of Guyana shared a glimpse of the launching ceremony of Stem Cell Therapy. Stem Cell Therapy, a treatment for Chronic, Autoimmune Diseases and Cancer, was launched on Friday, January 4, 2023, at the Woodlands Hospital.

According to the update by the ministry, this initiative was facilitated through a collaboration between Woodlands Hospital Limited and Fidelity Healthcare Limited in Trinidad and Tobago.

The President of Guyana, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, while delivering his feature address, stated that the launch of Stem Cell Therapy is a bold and innovative step. He further expressed that medical science must move to new levels.

“In the next seven years, the government is building in Guyana a first-world healthcare system for the citizens as well as a healthcare system that is fit for purpose and one that will provide global healthcare services for the rest of the world”, the president said.

Meanwhile, during his remarks, the Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, said the initiative was a very innovative and pioneering step for medicine in Guyana. He stated that the Human Organ Transplant Bill, which was passed in the National Assembly in Guyana last year, speaks to regenerative medicine, such as stem cell treatment.

Among those present at the launching ceremony were several officials and medical professionals from both the private and public health sectors.

Along with this, on Friday, Dr Soumitra Pathare, an International Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) Consultant, paid a courtesy call visit to the Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, at his Brickdam Headquarters.

The meeting was focused on a one-week consultation that was conducted with mental health experts and government agencies for the development of the Guyana Mental Health Action Plan. The meeting was attended by Dr Latchmie Lall, Head of Disease Control/Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Dr Timothy Morgan, Coordinator of the Mental Health Programme.
