Guyana: Prez Irfaan Ali meets residents of Leopold Street, shares govt ideas of development

Guyana: President Irfaan Ali told residents of Leopold Street, Werk-en- Rust that the Prez Ali led-government development plan will positively impact every single community and benefit all its citizens of the country.

President Ali made this statement while interacting with scores of residents during a visit to the community on the morning of Saturday.

According to the government of Guyana, he spoke about improvements to roads and drainage systems and pointed to the importance of training young people in technical areas to get active and positive involvement in the development and transformation of the country. He also spoke about the importance of education and opportunities for women.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, senior members of the Guyana Police Force, Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken (ag), as well as technical staff from the Office of the President, were also on the visit.

Furthermore, President Irfaan Ali conducted walkabouts in the communities of Grove and Great Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara on Saturday.

He inspected the roads and drainage systems while addressing the concerns of residents, including littering and blocked drains that lead to flooding. Residents were also concerned about the condition of the Grove Public Road and squatting in the area.

President Ali explained that the Grove Public Road and parallel drains are being widened and rehabilitated. He said that littering in the community was “painful to see” and noted that a collaboration would be done between the Guyana Police Force, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) to address the problem.

He also said that officials from the Ministry of Housing and Water would return to the community and work with squatters to find solutions.

The Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat; Police Commissioner (ag) Clifton Hicken; Government officials and representatives from the NDC were also part of the walkabouts.
