President Dr Irfaan Ali was on Thursday, September 29, awarded the Caribbean Global Leader Award by UK-based The Caribbean Global Awards for outstanding leadership in advancing the interests of Guyana and ensuring regional cooperation.
This great achievement reflects the dedication of Dr Ali to the growth both in Guyana and across the entire Caribbean Region. The vision through his tireless endeavours has been able to impact significant growth in the fields, including the economy, food security, and sustainable development.
President Ali, since taking office, has always emphasized that regional cooperation must be given special importance, mostly to participate actively in the activities of CARICOM.
He has been a trailblazer leader in creating positive interdependence between nations in the CARICOM member countries and has fostered cooperation at strategic fields such as agriculture, trade, energy, and security.
Another flagship, one of the many initiatives under Dr Ali’s administration is CARICOM Agri-Food Systems Agenda, which is geared towards bringing down the food import bill of the region with high agricultural self-sufficiency. This sets a pathway for Guyana to play a key role in dealing with food security issues in the region.
Beside the efforts towards agricultural initiatives, Dr Ali is an outspoken person on the matter of infrastructure development and climate resilience within the Caribbean. He gives top priority to sustainable development, knowing that this will benefit the region by developing climate resilient infrastructure, thereby protecting it against impacts of climate change.
His efforts to attract partnerships and investments in projects about energy sustainability and modernizing infrastructure have catapulted Guyana into being able to take the lead in the region to pursue green energy and environmental responsibility.
He has so far made use of the new oil wealth of Guyana in a responsible manner. For example, he has channelled the revenues from the exploitation of oil for national and regional development projects by using the country’s resources to create shared, transnational benefits.
In so doing, by using revenues from oil to diversify the economy, improve education, healthcare, and social programs, his administration has been able to bring his broader vision of a shared prosperity throughout the Caribbean.
He has been a voice and advocate for a united Caribbean to be heard on the world platform, serving the interests of the region in forums such as the United Nations.
His stand on issues like climate change and demands for fairer global development policies have made him a respected leader who makes sure that concerns from the Caribbean are not only heard but addressed.
This Caribbean Global Leader Award honors President Dr Irfaan Ali’s inspiring leadership and his dedication to a collaborative, peaceful, and prosperous future for the Caribbean.
