Guyana: Ministry of Health celebrates Limb Loss Awareness Month

Guyana: As the world celebrates Limb Loss Awareness Month, the Ministry of Health’s Rehabilitation and Disability Services department hosted its first-ever, Amputee Health Fair at the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre, on April 28, 2022 (Thursday).
The event was organised to spread awareness as well as give hope to persons who have lost all or part of an arm, hand, leg, etc, by amputation.
During his remarks, Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony reminded those in attendance that the Ministry is concerned about their well-being and is working towards providing prostheses to those in need in the shortest possible time.
The Minister also praised the organisers of the event for the initiative while adding that similar programmes will be rolled out in the future with the inclusion of persons who would have lost their hearing.
To serve the amputees present at the fair, there were Nutritionists, Representatives from the Diabetic Foot Centre, National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and Janice E Simons Orthotics and Prosthetics Workshop.
Also present were a Pharmacist, a private Lawyer and a Social Worker. Free random blood sugar and blood pressure testing were done on-site.
Also in attendance, were Mr Ashford Ambedkar; the Administrator and Dr Melisa Corlette-Sengwe, Rehabilitation Officer.
