Guyana: Kako and Jawalla Residents to Benefit from Technical and Vocational Training

Guyana: The residents of Kako, Region Seven on Sunday, June 26, 2022, were engaged by Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilto, Senior Technical Officer, Bevon Sheperd and other officials to work on enforcing the delivery of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses.

A meeting was held at the village community centre and saw more than one hundred persons, young and old, given the opportunity to interact with the minister on technical and vocational skills gap within their village.

After such was listed, the minister informed the gathering on the work the Board of Industrial Training is doing to deliver several skills to the people of Guyana, whether near or far, for free.

The Minister also highlighted that it is very important that person pursing the programme be committed top completing same, since it is an intuitive to transform the lives of citizens to fill the gap with the job market.

Before the end of the meeting, the residents listed programmes that will be beneficial to the community to boost their livelihood, such as, General Building Construction, Garment Construction. As for Jawalla residents, Boat Building and General Building Construction were listed as a need for the community.

The residents were told by the minister that technical officers of the bit will revisit the communities and logistics will be done to deliver the mentioned programmes within a month.

Additionally, in Guyana Co-op’s week commenced today with an Interfaith Service at the Ministry of Labour Tarmac, under the theme, “Build a Better World Together.”

Attending the ceremony was Permanent Secretary, Bishram Kuppen, Advisor to the Minister of Labour, Gillian Burton-Persaud, Chief Co-operatives Development Officer, Debbie Persaud, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Consultant, Gwyneth King, Chairperson of the IMC of Guyana NationalCooperative Union Limited , Saskia Onwuzurike, and Senior Superintendent, Calvin Brutus, among other officials.

Kuppen welcomed the gathering and gave brief history on the formation of Co-operatives in Guyana and its benefit to its citizens, other officials at the gathering also touched on the meaningful contribution of the Co-op’s sector to economic growth.

In Guyana, the importance of cooperatives in the early years, was of great importance and significance and that can be seen in the official naming of our Country in 1970, which is the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.

Cooperative societies were formed by pooling resources and they numbered in the hundreds in the late 70’s and 80’s in such sectors as small and medium scale farming, agro-processing, consumer, marketing, and the transportation sector where a number of institutions created to support them.
