Guyana: Health Minister attends Flag Raising ceremony at Region 4

Georgetown, Guyana: Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony attended the Flag Raising ceremony hosted by the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Region #4 Demerara/ Mahaica, located at Triumph, East Coast Demerara, to commemorate Guyana’s 53 Republic Anniversary, on February 22, 2023.

According to the Ministry of health, in 2023, Republic Day is being observed under the theme, “Mixing and Mashing as One Guyana”. While delivering the feature address, Dr Anthony highlighted some of Guyana’s historic achievements and plans for the coming year, especially in the area of healthcare and service delivery.

As per the Minister of Health, a fully equipped Diabetic Centre will soon be commissioned at Lusigan on the East Coast of Demerara. This facility will be staffed with medical personnel who will offer specialised treatment and care to persons suffering from diabetes.

He further stated that within Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), two Regional Hospitals will soon be constructed and fully equipped to handle Outpatient Services, Accident and Emergency Services, Dental Services and other related services to help reduce the overcrowding at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), which will then remain a referral hospital.

The Health Ministry of Guyana has informed that Minister has assured that the two new hospitals are being built at Enmore along the East Coast Demerara Corridors and Diamond along the East Bank Corridors.

Minister Anthony also highlighted that the MOH is working to develop it’s first Maternal and Child Health Hospital, which is being built at Ogle, East Coast Demerara. “When that hospital is completed, it will be able to perform Cardiovascular Services, along with other Special and relevant services that will be able to treat Pediatric Diseases”, he explained.

In closing, Dr Anthony informed the audience of the Ministry’s plans to migrate the Ministry’s training programmes from the hybrid format to an online platform. The new method will soon be launched for the nursing programme.

The Minister explained that the MOH would be recruiting approximately one thousand (1000) people to be enrolled in the Registered Nursing Programme, which will be done online for three years.

The ceremony was also attended by Regional Executive Officer Donald Gajraj, Regional Chairman Daniel Seeram, among other members from RDC, Councillors, Members of Parliament and the Joint Services.
