Guyana: Citizens undergo 5 occupational training programmes at Belladrum Secondary School

Guyana: Fifty-five (55) residents of Belladrum and other surrounding communities in Mahaica – Berbice are undergoing five occupational training programmes at the Belladrum Secondary School.

Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton visited the batch of trainees on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, for an observation exercise of the programmes. Participants of the training programmes offered by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) also informed the minister on the beneficial aspect of the courses offered to members of the community.

The technical and vocational courses listed are Commercial Food Preparation, Garment Construction, Introduction to Agro Processing, Furniture Making and Information Technology.

Out of the 55 trainees, they are ten in the Furniture making class, comprised of seven (7) males and three (3) females, ten (10) females in Introduction Agro Processing, twelve (12) trainees in Commercial Food Preparation, comprised of three (males) and nine (9) females, (10) females trainees in Information with one (1) male and twelve (12) females practicing Garment Construction.

The programmes are expected to be completed in January, 2023.

Two days earlier, Minister Hamilton participated in North Georgetown Secondary Business, Science and Technology Expo, 2022. The school started its first Business Expo in 2020, leading the way to prepare for entrepreneurship.

The management of the secondary school invited Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton to interact with students to raise awareness on the growing technical and vocational sector.
A grand cultural show was planned by the students through skits, dances, spoke words, among other acts.

The school’s lawn was transformed by the students with an eye catching decor, entertaining guests with a brief sip and paint session. The main focus of the event does not focus only on business but the delivery of science and technology programmes implementation in the school system, preparing final year students for the world of work.

The exhibition was not limited to just students of the North Georgetown Secondary School to view the items but neighbouring schools were also invited to participate in the exercise.
