Guyana: 27-year-old vendor charged for possessing 6100 gms cannabis

A 27-year-old vendor of Guyana was charged with the offense of possessing and trafficking of 6100 grams of cannabis on 28th May 2024. Following which he has been remanded to prison until 6th June 2024 for the offence he committed.

Georgetown, Guyana: A 27-year-old vendor was charged with the offense of possessing and trafficking of 6100 grams of cannabis on 28th May 2024. Following which he has been remanded to prison until 6th June 2024 for the offence he committed.

The suspect has been identified as Shamar Browne, a vendor of Lot 587 La Parfaite Harmonie, West Coast Demerara. The apprehension of the suspect took place on 23rd May 2024 on the day of the offence.

He was later taken to the Diamond Magistrate Court and was presented before Her Worship Judy Latchman, where he was accused of the offense of possessing narcotics with the purpose of trafficking.

Browne was not pleaded guilty and was remanded to prison until June 6th. Following his hearing at the court, the residents of the community took to their social media accounts and expressed anger on the judicial system of Guyana. They also raised their concern about the surge in the cases of drugs possession.

They have requested the administration to take stringent measures with a vision to safeguard the younger generation of the country from getting indulged in such kind of drug activities. They have also asked them to enhance the security system of the country in order to foster peace and prosperity.

One person commented “Guyana Justice system is the biggest joke this is what they have always been doing. I think they have forgot their duties and responsibilities; they really need to understand the real meaning of prevailing justice.”

Another person commented the following: “Guyana is no longer a safe nation; I have been frequently observing an increase in crime activity. There is a real need to do something to protect the citizens of the country from criminals.”

The administration of the country has also stated that they are implementing stringent policies and plans in order to enhance the safety and security of the country. They have also shared that they are planning to host workshops with a motive to reduce the consumption of drugs by teaching youth about the harsh effects of overdose. The administration has emphasised on their focus of making Guyana a drug free nation.
